The 1901 Census is now available online. I'll be keeping some notes about it on this page.
An initial report of the service is available from the BBC.
The site doesn't seem to be coping too well! It's received a lot of publicity, and most people will be off work, with plenty of time to play with it. Hopefully we'll have more success later.
It seems I wasn't the only person having problems with the Census site. The BBC reported yesterday that the site has been taken offline, due to overwhelming interest.
A couple more articles are now available about the problems with the Census site. There's even a report from someone who had a little success with the site ... before it crashed for her (of course).
The site has apparently been relaunched, eight months after it fell over. At the moment things are looking good, but we'll have to wait and see whether it can handle the load as word of its reappearance spreads across the web...
The BBC are reporting that this is a deliberate attempt at quiet launch, after the level of traffic the last launch received. However, the very fact that the Beeb is reporting it may scupper their hopes for the 'softly softly' approach...
Now updated to include National Archives (NA) links, which seem more reliable than Public Records Office (PRO) links.
